Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process used by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) in Australia to assess an individual’s existing skills, knowledge, and competencies against the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification. Instead of repeating training they have already completed or skills they already possess, applicants can have their existing experience assessed for recognition. This experience may come from employment, informal training, volunteering, previous education, or general life experience, whether gained in Australia or overseas.
If an applicant demonstrates competency across all required units, the RTO may award the relevant qualification. If some competency requirements are not met, the RTO may recommend targeted gap training or further assessment to address the outstanding requirements. Applicants may also receive credit toward a qualification for previously completed relevant training.
An RPL-issued qualification has the same formal standing under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as the equivalent qualification obtained through a traditional training pathway, provided it is legitimately awarded by an authorised RTO following a compliant assessment process.
For official information, visit the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) Recognition of Prior Learning guidance.
RPL operates within Australia’s national vocational education and training framework. Registered Training Organisations must follow applicable regulatory requirements to ensure that assessments are fair, consistent, and based on reliable evidence of competency.
1. The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)
The Australian Qualifications Framework is Australia’s national policy for regulated qualifications across the education and training system. It establishes qualification levels and supports consistency in the outcomes of Australian qualifications.
RPL assessments must evaluate an applicant’s existing skills and knowledge against the relevant qualification requirements and units of competency. The assessment must reflect the appropriate level of knowledge, skills, and performance expected for the qualification.
2. The Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2025
The Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2025 came into effect on 1 July 2025, replacing the previous 2015 Standards. These requirements establish expectations for training quality, assessment integrity, student support, and continuous improvement.
Under the applicable Standards, RTOs must ensure that:
Students receive clear information about the availability of RPL and the process for accessing it.
Assessments are conducted fairly and consistently, with appropriate flexibility for individual circumstances.
Decisions are based on sufficient, valid, authentic, and current evidence of competency.
Assessors meet the applicable credential, competency, and industry requirements.
Assessment processes are monitored and reviewed to maintain quality and regulatory compliance.
ASQA also monitors RPL practices as part of its broader regulatory work to protect the integrity of nationally recognised qualifications. Applicants should be cautious of providers promising guaranteed qualifications without a proper assessment or offering qualifications without sufficient evidence of competency.
Choosing a reputable RTO and following a transparent assessment process helps ensure that any qualification awarded is legitimate and nationally recognised.
Save Time and Money
RPL can reduce the time and cost involved in obtaining a qualification by recognising skills and knowledge you have already developed. Depending on your experience and the qualification requirements, you may avoid repeating some or all of the learning covered by a traditional course.
Improve Your Career Prospects
A nationally recognised qualification can strengthen your resume, demonstrate your professional capabilities, and support applications for new positions or career advancement. RPL provides an opportunity to formally recognise relevant skills developed through years of practical experience.
Support Professional Development
RPL helps you document and validate your existing expertise. Obtaining a relevant qualification can also provide a foundation for further education, specialised training, and long-term career development.
Reduce the Need for Classroom-Based Training
RPL focuses on assessing existing competency rather than requiring applicants to complete an entire training program. Depending on the RTO’s assessment process, evidence may be submitted remotely, and additional assessment activities may be arranged where necessary.
Support Visa and Migration Applications
A relevant Australian qualification may support certain employment, skills assessment, or migration-related requirements. However, RPL does not automatically guarantee visa eligibility or a positive migration skills assessment. Applicants should confirm the requirements of the relevant assessing authority and visa pathway before applying.
Meet Industry and Licensing Requirements
Some occupations require specific qualifications, licences, or registrations. RPL may help experienced workers obtain a relevant qualification where their existing competency meets the required standards. Applicants should check whether the relevant licensing authority accepts the qualification and whether additional requirements apply.
Gain Credit Toward Further Study
Depending on the education provider and course requirements, a qualification or units achieved through RPL may support applications for credit or advanced standing in further vocational or higher education. This can potentially reduce the amount of additional study required.
Obtain a Nationally Recognised Qualification
When an authorised RTO awards a qualification following a compliant RPL assessment, the qualification has the same formal standing as the equivalent qualification obtained through another recognised training pathway. Employers and relevant authorities assess qualifications according to their requirements and the circumstances of the role or application.
Anyone with relevant skills, knowledge, and experience aligned with a nationally recognised qualification may be eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning. Applicants may have gained their experience through paid employment, self-employment, previous training, volunteering, or other relevant activities in Australia or overseas.
Eligibility depends on the qualification, the units of competency being assessed, and the evidence available to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge.
A resume or personal statement can help explain an applicant’s background, but it is generally not sufficient on its own to establish competency. Supporting evidence must demonstrate that the applicant meets the relevant assessment requirements.
Step 1: Initial Skills Assessment
The process begins with an initial discussion to understand your career goals, work history, existing qualifications, and practical experience. This helps identify a potentially suitable qualification and determine whether RPL may be an appropriate pathway.
You will also receive information about the assessment process, expected documentation, applicable fees, and the evidence required by the assessing RTO.
Step 2: Evidence Portfolio Preparation
Applicants prepare an evidence portfolio demonstrating their competency in the relevant occupation. The evidence required varies depending on the qualification and the units being assessed.
Common examples include:
Employment references describing your duties, responsibilities, and employment dates.
Workplace photographs or videos demonstrating relevant tasks, where appropriate.
Previous qualifications, training certificates, and statements of attainment.
A current resume detailing your relevant work experience.
Relevant licences, certifications, and professional registrations.
Work samples, project records, or other documents demonstrating practical competency.
Third-party reports or workplace verification, where required.
The portfolio should provide clear, relevant, and authentic evidence of your skills. Your assessor may request additional documentation or practical demonstrations if the submitted evidence does not adequately establish competency.
Step 3: Formal Assessment Against Units of Competency
A qualified assessor from the RTO evaluates your evidence against the requirements of the relevant units of competency. The assessment may involve reviewing documents, conducting an interview, requesting workplace verification, or arranging practical demonstrations.
The assessor determines whether the evidence demonstrates the required level of competency. If gaps are identified, you may be asked to provide further evidence, complete additional assessment activities, or undertake targeted gap training.
Step 4: Qualification Issuance
If the RTO determines that you have met all the requirements for the qualification, it may issue the relevant nationally recognised qualification.
If only some units have been achieved, the RTO may issue a Statement of Attainment for those units, where applicable, and explain what additional requirements must be completed to obtain the full qualification.
The outcome depends on the assessment findings and the RTO’s decision. RPL is an evidence-based process, so a successful outcome cannot be guaranteed before the assessment is completed.
Preparing an evidence portfolio and understanding the requirements of an assessing RTO can be challenging, particularly when you have gained your skills through years of practical experience rather than formal education.
Our team helps applicants understand the RPL process and prepare their applications for assessment by our partnering RTOs. We aim to make the process clearer, more organised, and easier to navigate.
We can assist you with:
Qualification Guidance: Identify qualifications that may align with your work experience, career goals, and existing skills.
Evidence Preparation: Understand the documents and supporting evidence required for your chosen qualification.
Portfolio Review: Organise your evidence and identify potential gaps before submission to the assessing RTO.
Application Support: Coordinate with partnering RTOs and help you understand the next steps throughout the assessment process.
Our role is to guide you through the application process and help you prepare relevant evidence. The final assessment decision and qualification issuance remain the responsibility of the authorised RTO.
If you have relevant work experience and want to explore whether RPL is suitable for you, our team can help you understand your options.
